Many of the students showed their appreciation for Newfoundland and Labrador heritage by sharing stories of their own memories and experiences growing up in the province, from skipping stones with grandpa, camping with their families in our beautiful parks, to watching icebergs float by our coast!

This year’s overall winner was Chelsea Simon, a grade 9 student from Cloud River Academy, Roddickton. Chelsea interpreted an important part of our heritage in her drawing  ‘Medicine in the Air, Land, and Sea'.

My design has historical significance. It shows a dog sled, a boat, and a plane delivering medicine to rural areas. This used to happen when roads didn’t go to small communities. That is why I chose this design.

The Story and Design Contest is a warm up to the regional Heritage Fairs. The Heritage Fairs give young people across the province the opportunity to engage in their communities, speak with tradition bearers, and learn something new about who they are and where they’ve come from.
