The Young Citizens program is a national initiative to complement the provincial Heritage Fairs, an annual event where students present the results of their research on Canadian heroes, legends and key events in Canadian history. Participants in the Young Citizens program were selected at the fairs and asked to made a short video about their Heritage Fair topic.

2016 Young Citizens

In 2016,  approximately 200 students from all provinces and territories participated in Young Citizens. Their videos were posted online so that all Canadians could see their hard work.  A public vote opened on June 13th and closed on July 6th, 2016. The result of the popular vote made up 50% of a student’s score and a panel of judges organized by Canada’s History made up remaining 50% of the final score.   As a result, 26 students have been chosen to attend Canada’s History’s National Youth Forum in Ottawa from November 19th to 22nd, 2016.

In 2016 two young citizens from this province were chosen to attend the forum and to exchange ideas with fellow Canadian students from ages 10 to 16. Congratulations to Sophia Sheppard of Clarenville and Evan Natsheh of St. John’s.
