The Young Citizens program is a national initiative to complement the provincial Heritage Fairs, an annual event where students present the results of their research on Canadian heroes, legends and key events in Canadian history. Participants in the Young Citizens Program were selected at the fairs and asked to made a short video about their Heritage Fair topic.

2017 Young Citizens Program

In 2017,  approximately 200 students from all provinces and territories participated in Young Citizens. Their videos were posted online so that all Canadians could see their hard work. A public vote opened on June 12th and closed on July 7th, 2016. Two students from each province/territory have been chosen as award winners, with one recipient selected via popular vote, and the other selected by a panel of judges. As a result, 26 students from across the country have been chosen to attend Canada’s History Society' National Youth Forum this Fall in Ottawa.

2017 Young Citizens Award Recipients

In 2017 twelve Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Fair students participated in the Young Citizens Program. Two students have chosen as the award recipients and will be attending the National Youth Forum to exchange ideas with fellow Canadian students between the ages of 10 and 16.
