Signal Hill First World War Encampment
The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (HSA) and Parks Canada are pleased to announce a weekend of special interactive activities exploring the living history of the First World War. After Beaumont-Hamel: Remaking the Newfoundland Regiment will take place at Signal Hill National Historic Site from Friday, August 12th to Sunday, August 14th.
The three day event will bring together military interpreters from Signal Hill National Historic Site, members of the Signal Hill Tattoo, the Great War Living History Committee, For King and Empire, the Halifax Citadel Regimental Association, and the Royal 22e Regiment representing the Van Doos.
The recreated First World War encampment will feature ongoing experiences, including:
- First World War food
- Uniforms of the First World War
- Equipment of warfare
- The role of doctors and nurses
Scheduled Activities:
- Explosive weapons demonstrations
- Dress, exercise & drill like a WWI soldier
- Gas attack safety equipment demos
- Demonstrations of the Lee Enfield Rifle
Special Performances:
- The Signal Hill Tattoo: Saturday, 3:00pm
A special re-enactment celebrating Signal Hill's long military history, as the award-winning Signal Hill Tattoo presents a showcase of historical music, maneuvers and pageantry.
- Platoon Attack Demonstration: Sunday, 3:00pm
A dynamic demonstration of First World War tactics. Pyrotechnic artillery detonations, machine gun and rifle fire, and dramatic smoke will enhance this recreation of a historical Platoon level training exercise
Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador:
The Historic Sites Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting and preserving the cultural heritage of the province. The HSA is the oldest Parks Canada Cooperating Association in the country and has partnered with the agency on enhancements of Newfoundland and Labrador’s National Historic Sites since 1981. Joint initiatives at Signal Hill National Historic Site have included: operation of the Signal Hill Heritage Shop, annual funding towards the Signal Hill tattoo, special events commemorating the War of 1812, new exhibits within the visitor centre, refurbishment of the interior of Cabot Tower, and the reconstruction of the Queen’s Battery barracks.
