Meet the Artists
April Learie - Mixed Media
April first turned her artistic inclinations into a small business ten years ago, offering her fused glass creations for sale at local crafts fairs. However, five years ago she was looking for a change and new inspiration, which she found during her frequent visits to rural Newfoundland. A lifelong beachcomber, April began creating her unique Outports to utilize the driftwood and other found objects that washed up on our province’s shores. The result is colourful miniature houses, with teeny clotheslines and gardens, reminiscent of our island’s rural communities.
Patsy Gosse - Photography
Patsy is a self-taught photographer who is inspired by the iconic scenes and landscape of her home province, Newfoundland and Labrador. Her foray into professional photography began as a way to fundraise for a family in need, but it quickly grew to become a vibrant small business. Now, fifteen years later, Patsy is a busy artist, often found selling her work at local craft fairs and shows. Patsy is constantly finds new inspiration in this island we call home, and has recently started showcasing her pieces in reclaimed wooden windows, with the rustic frames enhancing the rural charm of her pieces.
Amber LeDrew-Bonvarlez - Painting
A native Newfoundlander, Amber received an Honours Fine Arts Degree from the University of Waterloo. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in Southwestern Ontario and Newfoundland, and she has also worked as an educator and manager at several galleries - both at major institutions and independent businesses. Through her mixed media paintings, Amber explores the subjects of solitude and nostalgic sentimentality. Using a variety of mediums, she endeavours to evoke memory and create a harmony between these two elements through the layering of paint and carefully chosen sheet music.
Wendy Shirran - Pottery
Wendy first discovered her connection with clay while working towards her BEd Art Specialist at NSCADU. Since graduating in 2003, Wendy has spent most of her time teaching the fundamentals of ceramics and creating one-of-a kind pieces for exhibition. She is currently working at the Craft Council of as Clay Studio Coordinator. Wendy draws inspiration from her international travels, natural and built environments she connects with – flora, fauna, architecture, textures and patterns. She translates this inspiration into carefully thought out patterns and designs, which she applies using a variety of surface decorating methods including silk screen transfer, slip trailing, luster and glaze application.
