Contributed $4,500 to the development of the educational poster series Aboriginal Peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Aboriginal Poster Series Launched at Port au Choix

Port au Choix, NL (June 19, 2004) - - The Historic Sites Association (HSA) hosted a special ceremony at Port au Choix National Historic Site of Canada today. The celebration, held on the eve of National Aboriginal Day, focussed on the launch of a special poster series - “Aboriginal Peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador.” The series was on display at the Port au Choix Visitor Centre during the ceremony, so that visitors could take a closer look at the colourful images and educational text.

The celebration marked the completion of “Aboriginal Peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador,” a curriculum enrichment resource developed as part of the HSA’s Heritage Outreach Program in collaboration with Parks Canada and in consultation with the Provincial Department of Education.
Catherine Power, Honourary Chair of the HSA commented, “The poster series vividly depicts the history and culture of aboriginal peoples in the province. It will certainly be a useful teaching tool for our schools and public libraries. The Historic Sites Association is pleased to present the poster set, and it is especially fitting that we launch the poster series here at Port au Choix National Historic Site - a place well known for uncovering the history of early aboriginal presence in the province.

The series consists of 11 full-colour posters, and profiles all aboriginal groups of the province, ancient to present-day, including: Maritime Archaic Indians, Dorset and Groswater Palaeoeskimos, Recent Indian, Beothuck, Mi’kmaq, Inuit, Innu and Métis. The series also features activity sheets and games to enhance this new resource, which will meet curriculum outcomes for Grades 3-6 in Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Technology and Art.

At the end of the ceremony, the HSA presented a set of posters to the Ingornachoix Public Library, St. Theresa’s Elementary, Roncalli High School and Torrent River Academy.
