1812 Commemoration Events

During the summer of 2013 The Historic Sites Association of NL with help from Parks Canada  organized events at Signal Hill NHSC to commemorate the anniversary of the War of 1812.  Events included,

The Recruiting Party - aninteractive skit with enactors dressed in period uniform and costume recruiting audience participants into the King’s service for a shilling (which the participants kept as a memento).  One performance per week was held downtown, St. John’s.

The Encampment - a three day encampment on Signal Hill for select members of the community; The 1812 period was modelled and participants “lived” and trained as soldiers of the 1812-era (Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencibles) for three days.  They experienced period appropriate food, camped on Signal Hill in canvas tents,  received foot and musket drill training as well as training in the firing of the noon-day gun cannon.
