Jacob Elyk - 2018 Dr. Paul O'Neill Scholarship Recipient

Jacob Elyk is presented with the 2018 Dr. Paul O'Neill Scholarship by Dr. Jennifer Simpson, Dean of Humantities and Social Sciences at Memorial University.

Jacob Elyk has been named the recipient of the 2018 Dr. Paul O’Neill Scholarship for his academic excellence, personal passion, and dedication to his studies. Jacob is a Bachelor of Arts student at Memorial University where he is currently completing his fourth year of a co-operative Political Science degree with a minor in History, and he has been accepted to the University of New Brunswick’s Faculty of Law in the Fall.

Exploration of Newfoundland and Labrador history has been a common theme in Jacob’s work. He has completed many courses focusing on this province, with topics including politics and government, society and culture, and various topics relating to the province’s history. As part of his co-operative program, Jacob completed a work term at the Cupid’s Legacy Centre, where he conducted research on abandoned communities in the Conception Bay region. His work involved analyzing articles, government policy, census data, and personal testimonies to draw conclusions on what led to these communities being abandoned. His work culminated in a research paper and a series of recommendations to Cupid’s Legacy Centre for incorporating this new information into their interpretive programming. With his personal interest in NL history and politics, there is little doubt that Jacob Elyk will utilize his Newfoundland and Labrador studies in his future career and pursuits
