The Heritage and History Book Award represents outstanding works of non-fiction that enrich the general public’s knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador’s history. The HSA’s Book Awards Committee compiles the shortlist and carefully considers each selection before choosing the final recipient. These year's shortlist included eight titles representing an eclectic exploration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s history and heritage, with topics covering art, local knowledge, music, industry, war, food, and money. However, only one title could be chosen for recognition with the 2018 Heritage and History Book Award.

Towards an Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge: Excerpts from Chapters I & II by Pam Hall
Pam Hall is the recipient of the 2018 Heritage and History Book Award for her title “Towards an Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge: Excerpts from Chapters I and II”. Through her work, Hall sought to capture often undocumented aspects of our heritage and to catalogue traditional skills long used for rural survival. The first chapter documents the local knowledge of the Bonne Bay Area and the Great Northern Peninsula, while the second explores Fogo Island and Change Islands. To create her work, Pam spent extensive time in each community, meeting with local tradition-bearers who shared the how, where, when, and what of their experiences. A visual artist, filmmaker and author, Pam utilized beautiful illustrations and diagrams, to present her research in a highly original and artistic format, which will enrich the public’s knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador heritage for generations to come.
